Akron's Adam Najem named to U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team

By Michael Beaven Published: May 15, 2014

University of Akron midfielder Adam Najem has been named to the 24-player U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday.

Najem was one of the top freshmen in college soccer last fall.

The select group, which will be overseen by U-20 MNT assistant coach Brian Bliss, will train on the campus of N.C. State from May 17-25. The camp will feature friendly matches against the Carolina RailHawks (May 20), RailHawks U-23s (May 22) and Wilmington Hammerheads (May 24) while head coach Tab Ramos fulfills his duties as an assistant coach with the U.S. Men’s National Team at the team’s World Cup preparation camp in Palo Alto, Calif.

Najem was a member of the U.S. Under-18 National Team player pool in high school and is a current member of the New York Red Bulls Academy of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He was previously called in for the U-20 MNT training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., last January.

Najem, a native of Clifton, N.J., was a College Soccer Newsand Top Drawer Soccer All-Freshman Team honoree and a First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 2013 after leading the Zips with nine assists and four goals.

His assist total was ranked second-highest among all collegiate freshmen and represented the most by a Zips' freshman since Anthony Ampaipitakwong recorded the same total in 2007. Furthermore, Najem became the first UA freshman since Darren Mattocks in 2010 to score multiple goals in a game with both scores in a 2-1 victory at Cleveland State.

Najem finished second on the team with 17 points while starting 20 of 22 games as a freshman last year.

After the camp in North Carolina, the U-20 MNT will next meet at U.S. Soccer's National Training Center in Carson, Calif., for the NTC Invitational Tournament in mid-July.
