Zips Basketball: By the numbers - why UA beat Ball State

By George Thomas Published: January 30, 2014

If a coach were going to draw up a perfect game in basketball, it would have looked like the University of Akron men’s basketballs team’s 73-46 win over Ball State Wednesday night. Coach Keith Dambrot couldn’t have asked for much more from his team as a whole.  Here are six numbers that show that.  Why six?  There’s a duplicate number, of course.

4:  The Zips produced a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring in double digits for the game.  The best part about it:  freshman Kwan Cheatham flashed what coach Keith Dambrot sees in him.  Throughout the summer and fall training Dambrot’s consistent refrain consisted of telling me just how good Cheatham could be.  He produced a breakout game due to an ankle injury and illness to centers Isaiah Johnson and Pat Forsythe respectively.

Zips 59, Miami RedHawks 52: George Thomas' by the numbers

By George Thomas Published: January 16, 2014

Coach Keith Dambrot likened his team’s 59-52 win over the Miami RedHawks to that of a homely woman.  It was all that and more as the Zips struggled early and even when they got a lead couldn’t put the game away because of the RedHawks’ press.   Here are five numbers that keyed their win:

2:  The number of three-point shots the Zips hit of 13 in the first half.  Not only weren’t the treys falling, but the Zips passed on more than a few opportunities in the post for their big men, who at time looked frustrated.  Instead of trying to establish an inside presence that would open up the outside, they went for the trey.

Akron Zips at Ohio Bobcats: By the Numbers

By George Thomas Published: January 12, 2014

The Zips have suffered from one noticeable deficiency during the course of the season – a definite lack of chemistry.  Sunday’s  83-80 double overtime win – against a rival nonetheless – can only help them build that.  The Zips stared down adversity, including a nine-point second-half deficit in the second half with about eight minutes to go and a six-point deficit in the first overtime period, to pull the game out.  It could be a huge stepping stone toward sustained success.  Here are five key numbers that played a role in the victory:

5: The number of points Quincy Diggs score in the final 12 seconds to tie the game in the first overtime period.  Diggs connected on a three-pointer to cut the OU lead to 70-69 with 12 seconds to play.  After the Bobcats’ Nick Kellogg split a pair of free throws, he hit a jumper with six seconds left to tie the game, sending it to another overtime period.

Akron Zips at Ball State: By the numbers

By George Thomas Published: January 8, 2014

The University of Akron men’s basketball team might feel fortunate to get out of Muncie, Ind. with a win against the Ball State Cardinals.  The fought the Cardinals, the referees and themselves in the 72-68 victory. Occasionally dominant as they held a 15-point lead at one point, alternately frustrating when they allowed that first half lead to narrow to six points at halftime and maddening when they actually went down 47-45, it’s not the best way to start off a title defense, but a win is a win is a…  Here are five numbers – good and bad that tells the game’s story.

8:  UA kept the turnovers to a minimum turning the ball over just eight times during the course of the game.  Considering they arrived at Worthen Arena averaging 14.3 per game to almost cut that in half is huge, especially given the tightness of the game.
