No one wants to say it, but if Akron loses tomorrow at home against VMI, Zips fans could be looking at an oh-fer season.
The VMI went 3-8 last season, 2-4 in the Big South. This year, the Keydets have started 0-3, with all three losses to Division I-AA teams. They run a pro-style offense, and have a decent amount of experience on the roster.
But let's talk straight: This game isn't about "how well can VMI play" or "what VMI does on offense." When it's FBS vs. FCS, it's all about whether the superior athletes of the FBS team bothered to play hard.
If Akron loses, the amount of fans calling for a new direction to the program will double. There cannot be a repeat of Gardner Webb.
The Zips' goal must be to completely halt any VMI running. It must be to protect the quarterback. There's no excuse for Akron's line to get manhandled again.
