Akron Zips vs. Detroit Titans: By the Numbers

By George Thomas Published: December 18, 2013

The University of Akron overcame a number of mistakes to beat the Detroit Titans 79-60 Wednesday night at Rhodes Arena.

Here are five key number associated with the game:

9:  The number of three-point shots the Zips hit in the second half.  They erased a Detroit Titans 30-21 lead on the first three possessions of the second half and hit on 75 percent of their three-point shots in the second half.

17:  The number of points that Detroit got off turnovers in the first half.  The Zips started out ugly and the Titans took advantage eventually taking a 14 point lead before UA awakened from their stupor.

23:  The number of years Steve French, the voice of the Zips went without missing a call.  That ended Tuesday night when Bill Morgan, who calls games for the women’s basketball team, was pressed into duty because of French’s voice issues. “I told French before halftime that if we weren’t doing well you’re going to have to suit up.  But he didn’t listen to me obviously.  I don’t care if he could talk or not.  He could have done sign language for all I care,” coach Keith Dambrot said.

35: Demetrius Treadwell’s minutes:  Coach Keith Dambrot mentioned that he wanted to try to keep Treadwell 28-32 minutes per game but when he’s delivering, how can you take him off the court?  “We were in a dogfight so I had to use him in the first half.  He’s better when he’s fresh, but he’s so darn physical it’s like a man amongst boys all the time,” Dambrot said.

71: The percentage the Zips shot in the second half.  They hit 20-of-28 shots to outscore the Titans 58-30 in the second half.
