Another big win
Softball
If you are a Zips fan, you probably know Akron has good programs for men's basketball, football, track, men's soccer and even rifle.
Softball is striving to add itself to that list.
The team won another game against a big-name team when the Zips (12-14) beat Notre Dame (20-11) by a 4-2 count on Wednesday.
Megan MacKenzie, who had little trouble striking me out, threw her 13th complete game of the year, striking out five and allowing just four hits.
Sure, 12-14 isn't a good record but consider that Akron beat Oregon (15-10) and Notre Dame within a two-week period. They also swept a three-game road series at Miami, the defending MAC champs.
Coach Julie Wright has the Zips playing at a high level, despite starting five freshmen. Not only are the freshmen holding their own, but they also are excelling, the Buchtelite's Adam Ferrise wrote in today's paper.
If the team continues to win, I will have to adjust my head coaching power rankings. Currently, they stand like so...
- 1. J.D. Brookhart - Football
- 2. Keith Dambrot - Men's basketball
- 3. Dennis Mitchell - Track and field
- 4. Newt Engle - Rifle
- 5. Scott Jones - Cross Country
Wright is close to sliding into the fourth or fifth spot.
