Close but no player of the week for Williams
Given the sheer numbers involved in quarterback Dalton Williams' performance Saturday, it seemed as he’d be a lock for a second consecutive East Division Player of the Week in the conference. Not so.
This weeks’ award went to Ohio’s quarterback, Tyler Tettleton, who completed 20-of-35 passes for 200 yards to nine different receivers and three TDs. The reason the conference bestowed the award on him? More than likely the level of competition involved.
Tettleton led the Bobcats comeback win over Div. I and C-USA opponent Marshall, while the Zips didn’t find too much resistance from the Bears from the second quarter on in their win.
Akron dreamin’
They weren’t visions of sugar plums dancing in coach Bowden’s head after the performance the defense gave Saturday. Instead, he’s having dreams of linebackers, linemen and defensive backs swarming.
The Zips defense played splendidly – especially in the second half of the victory. Bowden said that at one point during the week he told assistant head coach and defensive coordinator that he dreamed that the Zips wouldn’t be known for offense, but for his defense.
“We would become known for his fast defense,” Bowden said. “He would be putting together guys not fast in 40-yard dash time but how fast they could get from their place to the point of the ball. They’re getting faster and faster.”
Bowden said that is what the defense is starting to do, just fly to the ball.
Injury update: Williams’ ribs were tender after Monday’s practice, Bowden said. However, the fifth year senior is expected to be ready to face the Tennessee Volunteers this upcoming Saturday.
