Dambrot to get extension
Men's basketball
OK. I almost officially can stop whining about J.D. Brookhart and Keith Dambrot, who desperately needed contract extensions.
Terry Pluto reports that Mack Rhoades and Dambrot have agreed upon the terms of the contract, which would pay him about $180,000 through 2011.
Many of you assume that Brookhart will not last through the length of his contract, which is almost identical to Dambrot's. That may be true. Brookhart has high credibility and respect in college football circles.
Dambrot, however, told me a few weeks back that he has no intention to leave his alma mater ... with one caveat -- the university reasonably takes care of him. I think this contract does that.
I just got a text message from assistant coach Jeff Boals. The Zips left for Texas this morning. They will open the season Monday against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Women's basketball
Touted recruit Sarah Tokodi began her Akron career with 15 points, but the Zips still lost 85-58 to Saint Louis Friday night.
