Men's basketball
For every "hit" in recruiting season, there are several misses.
Akron offers about five scholarships for every one scholarship it has to give. Here is a rundown of what happened to some of the "misses" of the last five years...

2004 (actual signees: Bubba Walther and Quade Milum)
Tihon Johnson -- Signed with Idaho Position/location: SF; Columbus (Ohio) and Mt. San Jacinto College (Calif.) Update: Averaged 5.5 points per game as a senior.
Allan Hanson-- Signed with Akron, attended Wisconsin-Milwaukee Position/location: PG; Milwaukee, Wisc. Update: Played 114 games in four seasons. As a senior starter, Hanson averaged 4.7 points, 2.2 assists and 1.2 turnovers.

2005 (actual signees: Jimmy Conyers, Nate Linhart and John Rybak)
Brandon Ewing -- Signed with Wyoming Position/location: PG, Chicago Update: As a senior, plays 38 minutes per game, averaging 18.8 points and 5.2 assists per game.
Tory Robertson -- Signed with Evansville Position/location: SF; Frankfort, Ky. Update: He is no longer listed on the Purple Aces roster. I can't find anything else on him.
Ryan Childress -- Signed with Tennessee Position/location: C; Cincinnati Update: Played sparingly his first three seasons. Is now a senior, battling back from knee surgery. Has played four minutes all year.

2006 (actual signees: Steve McNees, Darryl Roberts, Chris McKnight and Mike Bardo)
Jerome Randle -- Signed with California Position/location: PG; Chicago Update: As a junior, averages 17.1 points and 5.1 assists per game, shooting 45 percent on 3-point attempts.
Ryan Sims -- Signed with Bowling Green Position/location: PG; Ft. Wayne, Ind. Update: Played sparingly before asking for his release to transfer this fall.
Rydell Brooks -- Signed with Niagara Position/location: PG; Akron (Buchtel H.S.) Update: Transferred to Akron, and then to jail.
Donald Lawson -- Signed with Western Michigan Position/location: PF; Chicago Update: Averages 5.3 points and 5.4 rebounds as a junior.

2007 -- (actual signees: Ronnie Steward, Brett McKnight and Steve Swiech)
Joe Jakubowski -- Signed with Bowling Green Position/location: PG; Toledo Update: Averages 8.1 points and 3.5 assists per game. One of the MAC's best young point guards.
Josh Miller -- Signed with Nebraska Position/location: PG; Cincinnati Update: Played as a true freshman and contributed 6.1 points and 3.6 assists per game. Has improved this seasons as a sophomore.
Tristan Thompson -- Signed with North Texas Position/location: SG; Angleton, Tex. Update: Averages 11.7 points as a sophomore.
Alex Kellogg -- Signed with Providence Position/location: PF; Columbus (Ohio) Update: Plays only 3.8 minutes per game as sophomore.

2008 (actual signees: Humpty Hitchens, Alex Sullivan, Brett McClanahan, Nik Cvetinovic and Andrew Parrish)
Aaron Austin -- Signed with Radford Position/location: PG; Newport, Va. Update: Has played sparingly in 12 games as a true freshman.
Chris Fouch -- Signed with Drexel Position/location: SG; New York City Update: Will redshirt.
Shelvin Mack -- Signed with Butler Position/location: SG; Lexington, Ky. Update: Averages 11.7 points, 3.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds as a freshman.
Brian Walsh -- Signed with Xavier Position/location: SG; Coraopolis, Pa. Update: Barely played in the first eight games, but not since.
Kellen Thornton -- Signed with Illinois State Position/location: SF; Country Club Hills, Ill. Update: Has played 4.7 minutes per game.
Bryant Irwin -- Signed with St. Joseph's Position/location: SF; Bridgeport, W.V. Update: Averages 11.6 minutes and 3.2 points per game.

The Redskins released Jason Taylor, who was hurt most of last year, but still played.
I think Taylor has a lot of All-Pro football in him. His Hollywood aspirations might cut that off, though.

Evan Bush will stay local.
The Cleveland City Stars signed Akron's four-year goalkeeper. The City Stars are considered to have the best fan base in the United Soccer League.
