Top Drawer Soccer has rated the Akron Zips 2012 recruiting class, which includes four of the top 11 recruits in the country, as the best in college soccer.
“Over the past five years, we have been fortunate that many of the top players in the country have chosen Akron and without question, this is one of the finest recruiting classes we have ever assembled. I know their impact will be felt immediately and, with a very strong core group of returning players, we expect to continue competing for national championships in the years to come,” coach Caleb Porter said in a news release.

Andrew Souders - D - 5-11 - 165 lbs. - Amherst, Ohio (Amherst Steele) - No. 6-ranked recruit according to Top Drawer Soccer … ranked No. 8 by ESPN RISE and No. 9 by College Soccer News … top-ranked recruit in Great Lakes Region (TDS) … team captain of the U.S. U-17 National Team … competed in the 2011 U-17 World Cup, alongside fellow UA recruits Koroma, Pina and Serna … played all 90 minutes against Cuba and Panama, and all 120 in a crucial semifinal victory()against El Salvador during the 2011 CONCACAF Championship … also started against Canada in the championship game … team earned a shutout in three of four matches he played in … joined residency in Fall of 2009 … currently plays for Columbus Crew Academy of the US soccer Developmental Academy.
Fernando Pina - GK - 6-0 - 180 lbs. - Houston, Texas (Challenge Early College HS) Ranked 10th-best recruit in the country by Top Drawer Soccer … is also ranked No. 2, behind fellow Zips' recruit Koroma, in the state of Texas … ranked No. 18 by ESPN RISE and No. 26 by College Soccer News … is considered the top goalkeeper recruit in the nation (TDS) … was one of the leading keepers for the U.S. U-17 team … competed in the 2011 U-17 World Cup, alongside fellow UA recruits Koroma, Serna and Souders … started three games, allowing just two goals in 298 minutes during the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship … earned a shutout in a 1-0 win over Panama … made seven International appearances in 2011 and allowed just six goals … regular in U.S. U-15 national team camps in 2009 and was invited into U-17 residency that fall … was part of the U-14 and U-15 Boys' National Team programs before joining Residency … has played with the Houston Dynamo of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy since 2009.
