First-round MAC results

Men's basketball
When people sing "It's the most wonderful time of the year..." around Christmas, I shake my head. It's March. Meaningful basketball games everywhere!

Eight MAC teams faced elimination today. Here are the results:
Buffalo never trailed in an painless 72-54 victory over the hapless Toledo Rockets.
Sophomore forward Flenard Whitfield scored a season-high 19 points and Player of the Year candidate David Kool added 20 as Western Michigan dispatched Bowling Green, 75-73.
Armon Bassett scored 25 as Ohio pulled away from Ball State in overtime to win, 85-77.
Eastern Michigan survived a home scare from Northern Illinois to advance with a 65-59 win.

The Zips will look for revenge against Eastern Michigan on Thursday. I have felt since the end of last season that EMU is the one team from the MAC West that has the talent to compete against the MAC East powerhouses. The Eagles showed it on Feb. 1, when they won by three at Rhodes Arena. Akron had a terrible shooting night, so there is obvious room for the Zips to improve. On the other hand, the Zips drew a first-round matchup against one of only three MAC teams to beat them.
Below is the rest of the bracket. I will be covering the Zips from Cleveland as long as they remain alive.
THURSDAY WMU vs. CMU -- noon EMU vs. Akron -- 2 p.m. Ohio vs. Kent State -- 7 p.m. Buffalo v. Miami -- 9 p.m.
FRIDAY WMU/CMU vs. EMU/Akron -- 7 p.m. Ohio/Kent vs. Buffalo/Miami -- 9 p.m.
SATURDAY Championship -- 6 p.m.
