Fleming close to choosing Zips
Football
It would have been a travesty to see another talented local player go elsewhere, especially considering Will Fleming's father, Jim, is the Zips' defensive coordinator.
But Rivals.com is reporting that the younger Fleming, a safety from Hoban with offers from Hawaii and Akron, is close to committing to the latter. If he waited, Illinois, Michigan State and Wake Forest could have offered a scholarship, too.
On the other hand, Rivals is saying Whitney Mercilus, the touted defensive end from Garfield High School, is probably headed for Illinois.
Buchtel cornerback Johnny Adams still could be coming to Akron, despite offers from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, Syracuse and West Virginia. He plans to narrow his list soon, though.

Here are two new scholarship offers...
Carlin Isles, all-purpose back, Massillon Offers: Akron and Ohio Height: 5-foot-8 Weight: 153 Speed: 4.28 Notes: Hah! Yeah right. If this guy really runs a 4.28, he'd be swatting away BCS offers. That's DeAngelo Hall speed. But still, even if he's lying by two-tenths of a second, Isles is a fast guy. He plays at Jackson High School. Likelihood: Add Isles to the list of locals whom the Zips need to really hammer. Maybe fellow Polar Bear Jay Rohr can put in a good word.
Jeremy Johnson, defensive end, Chicago Offers: Akron, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kansas State and Northwestern Height: 6-2 Weight: 240 Speed: 4.9 Notes: Scout.com gives Johnson one star. Rivals does not list him at all. That's surprising for a guy with five scholarship offers. Iowa State also has interest. Likelihood: The coaches will need to explain the urgency at defensive line and that Johnson could play his first year on campus. I'm sure they are.
