Gameday news and notes

By mrasor Published: January 2, 2007

Men's basketball

Like I expected, Akron is the favorite over Youngstown State tonight.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I can't find a game preview from the ABJ, PD or Vindicator. I suppose it's the holidays so some reporters are taking vacation time.

Anyhow, here are some predictions...

  • Oddsmakers have Akron as a 6- to 7.5-point favorite. The over-under is 137.

  • The Sports Network says it will be Akron 71, Youngstown State 64.

  • Danny Sheridan says it's Akron minus 6.5.

Akron should not have much problem winning tonight. Youngstown State, while a solid team, is exactly the kind of squad Akron's defense specializes in stopping. It has good offensive guards but no scoring threat over 6-foot-4.

Don't expect a blowout, though. It's a road game, and I expect a good crowd at the Beeghly Center. That should play in YSU's favor.

Prediction: Zips 75, Penguins 61
