Gameday news and notes
Men's basketball
"If I'm playing miniature golf with my wife, I'm gonna try and beat her ass," Keith Dambrot told me a few months ago when I asked about an irrelevant early-season game.
The Zips will need that competitiveness to beat Austin Peay tonight at 5 at Rhodes Arena, because, as the ABJ's Tom Gaffney points out, Akron has little to gain by winning.
- Gaffney's colleague George Thomas says fans will need DirecTV or the DISH Network to watch the Zips on ESPNU.
- Akron is a 15.5-point favorite tonight. The over-under is 135.
- Danny Sheridan takes the Zips minus 15.
- Jason Roberts writes about Mike Harkins on his site, UofAZips.com. On Monday, Montana State-Billings will honor Harkins, a UA alum, as its all-time most winningest coach.
I suggest taking Austin Peay with the under. This will be a defensive grind. The Zips eventually will pull away, but only because of their size.
The Governors are similar to Toledo in many ways. With four starters at 6-foot-5, they are very small, but they play bigger than that. They are athletic and thrive off perimeter defense and long-range shooting.
This will be more of a test for Austin Peay than Akron. At home, this should be a stress-free victory.
Prediction: Akron 67, Austin Peay 55
