Great season, not-so-great ending
Men's soccer
The Zips lost in a shootout to Maryland today. An unfortunate way to end such a spectacular season. The team made a lot of people care about soccer. As much as a national championship could have meant, losing now isn't catastrophic. The Zips are a relatively young team and will come back next year just as strong.
This team should be an inspiration to every Zips team. Even if you're in a minor sport, winning will get you attention. Winning will get you fan support.
Football
I meant to add this in my last post: The BCS Selection Show is tomorrow at 5 p.m. on ABC. The bowls will fall into place and Akron will find out who they will play on Dec. 26 in Detroit at the Motor City Bowl. My guess is New Mexico. I can't see the BCS people passing on Ohio State for Oregon. Nor can I see Connecticut knocking off No. 16 Louisville.
Men's basketball
The Zips have a large task ahead tonight at 10:30 against California. The Golden Bears are 4-1 but are quite beatable. Their only loss came to a MAC school (E. Michigan). Their wins came against cupcake teams.
Don't get me wrong. Cal will probably win. If the Zips make their shots and slow down forward Leon Powe, who scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds in his first game of the year against San Jose St, they will win.
