Guard on Puerto Rican national team commits to Akron

Akron added another link in its Puerto Rican pipeline this week when Carmelo Betancourt committed to become a Zip, according to's Twitter account.

By most accounts, Betancourt is a high-ceiling coup for Akron. Last year, Bleacher Report had this to say about the newest Zip:

Carmelo Betancourt (5?11, PG, Puerto Rico). This kid is a major talent. He has a great handle with amazing hesitation moves, can score from anywhere, is quick, can penetrate and is a great passer. He’s definitely a high-major player and we hear Georgetown is in the mix.

Betancourt, like his fellow countryman and future teammate Alex Abreu, is a point guard. This article suggests the 6-footer strives to manage the game, rather than to put up gaudy statistics.
