The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says a hard-hitting linebacker has committed to Akron. Derron Smith is 6-1 and 205 lbs. ESPN ranks him as the 79th best inside linebacker in the country. Scouting reports say he's a high-motor player, much like Jay Rohr, but lacks some agility. Another problem could be academic eligibility.
Remember Desmond Brently? He's the guy who ESPN ranked No. 32 among quarterbacks in the nation. He looked like he was coming to Akron. Now he's not. And it's not Brentley's fault. J.D. Brookhart pulled the scholarship offer to Brentley, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. My guess is that we don't need him since Sean Hakes signed last week. Don't forget current freshman Carlton Jackson. Brentley's only other Division I offer was from Temple, but the Owls fired their coach. So who knows where he's going.
I can't wait to see how Charlie Frye does today against Oakland. Now that he's starting, I get really excited about Browns games again.
