Zips football: A tale of fake punts and Toledo Rockets

By George Thomas Published: November 29, 2013

The Zips showed their take-no-prisoners attitude early in the game on an extremely risky albeit gutsy call with the score tied at 10 and 2:07 left in the first half against the Toledo Rockets.  They eventually won 31-29.

Facing a fourth-and-three at their own 16, UA faked a punt and senior Austin Bailey raced 16 yards for a first down setting the offense up at their own 32.  From there a calm Pohl led his team down the field completing passes for chunks of yardage and eventually landing at the Rockets 2-yard line.  On first-and-goal Chisholm walked into the end zone for the score and the halftime 17-10 halftime lead.

Zips football: UA holds off Toledo 31-29

By George Thomas Published: November 29, 2013

It may have been Black Friday for the rest of America, but there was nothing bleak about the effort the Akron Zips put forth Friday at InfoCision Stadium.

In a game of would be momentum shifts, the Zips staved off a Toledo Rockets comeback with two defensive efforts, including breaking up a two-point attempt to tie the game, to win 31-29 in the season finale.

Akron Zips forward Demetrius Treadwell returned to the gym in Rhodes Arena Thursday, but he did not practice.

An imbroglio has surrounded the Zips star player since his non-appearance at Wednesday’s practice. When asked about it coach Keith Dambrot offered little in the way of explanation not saying whether Treadwell quit the team or whether he’d been suspended.

Three & Out: Akron Zips at the UMass Minutemen

By George Thomas Published: November 15, 2013

This week's Three & Out: comes courtesy of Daniel Malone who covers the UMas Minutemen for The Republic/MassLive.

First down: A year since last season’s game in Akron, UMass is still a pretty bad team. The roster is deeper and more talented, but it’s far from truly being FBS-quality. The Minutemen have hung tough with a number of good teams this season, but are almost always worn down in the second half because of it. UMass came out on top last year, but I suspect the Zips’ development since then is ahead of the Minutemen’s.

Zips basketball: Notes from women's Tuesday win

By George Thomas Published: November 12, 2013

The Akron Zips 118-71win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles allowed coach Jodi Kest the luxury of getting to see what her bench players can do and coach them in a game situation. At one point during the rout in the second half the Golden Eagles starters came up with a 10-0 run to cut a 50-point lead down to 40.  Kest caused a timeout to encourage her bench players to win the game’s final minutes.

“They scored 10 points so you want to stop the momentum and these kids are having opportunities to play and they have to take advantage of it,” she said. “We have a really good starting team.  We have a really good seven, but we need more depth.  These are those opportunities that when you get on the floor, if you’re the floor general you have to run the show.  If you’re a post player you need rebounds.  This is your opportunity to showcase your talent so I can look at you say maybe I need to play you more.”

Zips basketball: UA falls to St. Mary's 85-63 in Tip

By George Thomas Published: November 12, 2013

The Akron Zips (1-1) went out west to California and played as if they were still adjusting to the time zone.

A midnight PST start time (3 a.m.) local time did them no favors, but a good portion of why the Zips dropped this game 85-63 to the St. Mary’s Gaels (2-0) was of their own doing.

Zips basketball: Time difference no bother for team against St. Mary's

By George Thomas Published: November 11, 2013

With the Akron Zips taking on St. Mary’s tonight on the West Coast at 3 a.m. local time, it would be easy for the team to have a built-in excuse for notching a “L” in one of the games in ESPN’s 24-Hour Tip-off Marathon at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif.

Time shift.  Lateness of the game.  Pick one.

Zips to head west to face Sooners in 2015

By George Thomas Published: November 7, 2013

Oklahoma announced that it has added Akron to its non-conference schedule for 2015. The Sooners and Zips will square off for the first time in Norman on Sept. 5, 2015.

Given what is about to happen with college football and the upcoming playoff system, the game should offer some national exposure along with substantial payday, incentives that may get rarer in the coming years.

Trickery helps lead UA to win over Kent State

By George Thomas Published: November 2, 2013

There’s little denying that defensively, the Akron Zips 16-7 win over the Kent State Golden Flashes represented one of the defense’s best Saturday’s of work, but the offense had its moments too, especially on the game’s opening drive.

The Zips marched straight down the field to open the game with a four-play, 78-yard drive that featured some some gutsy play and trickeration.
