Kennedy wins fans vote, loses overall

Zips fans did their part, but Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis won the USA Today Player of the Week award thanks to a consensus between the publication's football writers.

Fan voting went to Akron running back Dennis Kennedy, who had 34 percent of the tally, compared to Laurinaitis' 30 percent.

Ray Mernagh of reports Akron received a verbal commitment from a 6-foot-5 guard/forward from Lancaster, Ohio.

Brett McKnight will join his brother Chris McKnight on the Zips after he finishes his high school career.

Neither or lists Brett. Mernagh, who knows much more about college hoops than me, told me it is probably because Ohio isn't the most respected area.

Mernagh recently spoke with coach Keith Dambrot, who is happy with the way his guards are playing this summer. The guards have been practicing very well, particularly Cedrick Middleton, Nick Dials and Dru Joyce.

They're also breaking in freshman Steve McNees, which indicates to me he will see floor time this season.

Mernagh will sell his new MAC hoops book this fall. He agreed to send me a few chapters sometime soon. I'll give you the scoop later.
