Lemon returns to team

By mrasor Published: May 13, 2010

Shawn Lemon requested reinstatement to the team, and coach Rob Ianello granted it. Here is a statement from Lemon:

I would like to apologize to my teammates, the coaching staff and Athletic Director Tom Wistrcill for the poor and abrupt request to be released from my scholarship. I made an emotional decision and exercised poor judgment without fully considering the consequences of my actions. After realizing the error in my ways, I asked (head football) Coach (Rob) Ianello for the opportunity to be reinstated. I am very appreciative of the second chance that I am receiving to remain a member of the Akron Football program. I know we are embarking on an exciting time, and I am looking forward to helping the team in any way possible. I also want to apologize for allowing an internal issue within our football family to become public; I now fully realize how fortunate I am to be a student-athlete who represents The University of Akron.

Two weeks ago, Lemon told his coaches he was leaving the program. He had been considering his options before receiving an inadvertent text message from Ianello, intended for athletic director Tom Wistrcill, that questioned Lemon's motives.
This situation is probably embarrassing for all parties involved. Ianello accidentally sent the text. Lemon quit and went to the media. In the end, it worked out the right way. Lemon needs Akron, which is his best hope for becoming a professional; the Zips need Lemon's pass-rushing ability.
