LIVE: Akron defeats Northwestern 3-1 in NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament

NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament First Round Match

Northwestern University (11-4-5) vs. The University of Akron (13-3-4)

Thursday night from FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field

AKRON STARTING LINEUP

Goalkeeper: Junior David Meves.

Defenders: Senior Matt Dagilis, senior Michael Balogun, junior Chad Barson and freshman DeAndre Yedlin.

Midfielders: Junior Scott Caldwell, freshman Wil Trapp and freshman Bryan Gallego.

Forwards: Sophomore Darren Mattocks, freshman Aodhan Quinn and senior Luke Holmes.

FIRST HALF

And we are underway on the pitch at 7:30 p.m. UA is wearing blue uniforms with with white lettering and numbers outlined in gold. The Zips generally wear white uniforms at home with gold lettering and numbers outline in blue. 

Mattocks puts a shot on goal in the 15th minute that is saved by Wildcats freshman goalkeeper Tyler Miller. That is the Zips first shot on goal and the first shot on goal of the match.

Holmes cleared the ball away from the UA net in the 26th minute after NU senior midfielder Peter O'Neill set in a free kick.

AKRON 1-0

Caldwell gives the Zips a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 27th minute from 18 yards out. Holmes assisted on the goal. Caldwell's shot went to the right of Miller and into the net.

Wildcats senior forward Oliver Kupe places a shot on goal in the 33rd minute that Meves dives to his left and slaps away. 

Dagilis clears a loose ball off the line in the 37th minute.

Holmes puts a shot off the crossbar in the 38th minute.

Mattocks is fouled very close to the penalty box in the 39th minute. Caldwell then takes the shot and it goes wide right from 18 yards out.

HALFTIME ... AKRON LEADS 1-0

SECOND HALF

AKRON 2-0

Quinn extends the Zips lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 55th minute from 19 yards out.

O'Neill takes a corner kick in the 62nd minute for the Wildcats, the first of the match.

Wildcats sophomore forward Reed Losee proceeds to take two corner kicks in the 63rd minute.

Northwestern has been awarded a penalty kick after UA is called for a foul in the box.

AKRON 2-1

O'Neill cuts the Wildcats deficit in half with a goal of a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

Losee fires a shot on goal just a few seconds later that Meves slaps away.

UA is 14 minutes away from advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

AKRON 3-1

Mattocks boots the ball into the net in the 77th minute for his 19th goal of the season to push the Zips advantage to 3-1. Holmes assited on the goal.

FINAL ... AKRON WINS 3-1
