LIVE: Akron men's basketball defeats Detroit 81-63

Men's basketball non-conference game

The University of Akron vs. the University of Detroit Mercy

Saturday night at Rhodes Arena

Akron Zips (2-2) starters

Junior center Zeke Marshall, senior guard Brett McClanahan, junior guard Quincy Diggs, senior forward Nikola Cvetinovic and junior forward Chauncey Gilliam.

Detroit Titans (2-1) starters

Senior guard Chase Simon, sophomore guard Ray McCallum, junior guard Jason Calliste, senior center LaMarcus Lowe and junior forward Doug Anderson.

Observations and notes

UA trailed in the opening moments 9-2, but drew even at 11-11 with 13:49 remaining in the first half and then took a 13-11 lead 30 seconds later. Detroit never regained the lead.

The Zips opened up a 16-11 advantage courtesy of a 14-2 run with two 3-pointers by McClanahan, a Gilliam jumper and dunk and a Harney dunk and layup.

UA later utilized a 10-2 run to conclude the first half with a 43-32 halftime lead. Walsh, Cvetinovic and Marshall converted 2-point baskets, Josh Egner made a free throw and freshman Deji Ibitayo netted a 3-pointer.

UA is playing an up tempo style on offense with confidence.

The Zips defense is pressuring the Titans into several turnovers.

Marshall passed former Zips standout Romeo Travis as UA’s career leader in blocks with 166 with a first half swat.

UA is balanced in the scoring column. Sophomore forward Nick Harney leads the way with seven points. Cvetinovic, Diggs, and McClanahan have six points apiece. Brian Walsh and Gilliam have five points each.

Simon leads the Titans with 13 points.

Zips sophomore point guard Alex Abreu is missing the game due to a suspenion for a violation of university policy. Coach Keith Dambrot did not give details about the suspension Friday because of privacy concerns, including its length. 

Abreu is sitting in a seat courtside in the crowd with some students.
  

The Zips gained further separation in the second half and led 50-35 with 17:06 to go. Gilliam and Marshall each made a bucket and McClanahan buried a 3-pointer.

The Titans cut into their deficit and trailed 57-49 with 13:03 left, but Harney responded with a pair of baskets to make it 61-49 UA at 12:20. Harney has scored the Zips last eight points and has 15 minutes so far.

UA leads 66-49 with under nine minutes to go. Cvetinovic followed Harney's one man surge with a basket and Marshall made a 3-point play (layup and free throw).

Simon makes another jumper to give him a game-high 23 points. Simon's bucket makes the score UA 66, Detroit 53 with 8:07 on the clock.

Detroit cut its deficit to 68-59 with 4:45 to go,  but UA had an answer to make it 74-59 at 4:19 with a Walsh 3-pointer and a Cvetinovic steal, layup and free throw.

Marshall makes a basket to make it 76-61.

The clock has gone under two minutes, and the Zips lead 76-61.

Cvetinovic makes a 3-pointer and Diggs makes a bucket to concludes the Zips scoring.
