LIVE: Akron men's soccer defeats Penn State 1-0

Men's soccer match Wednesday from FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field

Penn State University vs. The University of Akron

Records: The Nittany Lions are 6-4-2 overall and 0-3-0 in the Big Ten. The Zips, ranked No. 5 in the country, are 8-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Mid-American Conference.


Goalkeeper: Junior David Meves.

Defenders: Junior Chad Barson, sophomore Eric Stevenson, freshman DeAndre Yedlin, freshman Bryan Gallego and freshman Wil Trapp.

Midfielders: Junior Scott Caldwell, senior Michael Balogun and sophomore Aodhan Quinn.

Forwards: Sophomore Darren Mattocks and junior Thomas Schmitt.


The match has begun. The score is 0-0.

Penn State had two corner kicks in the ninth minute. Neither opportunity resulted in a goal.

Akron gets a corner kick in the 11th minute, but no goal.

Penn State senior Mackenzie Arment puts a shot on goal in the 16th minute that Meves got a hand on. The ball went off the crossbar, and then was kicked out of bounds by UA. The Nittany Lions had a corner kick and got nothing.


Mattocks scores a goal in the 25th minute from just a few yards in front of Nittany Lions freshman goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton. Quinn gets the assist following a restart kick from about 25 yards away that came after a foul on the right side.

Mattocks gets another shot on goal in the 33rd minute that Wolverton dove and saved.

Quinn puts a shot on goal in the 45th minute that Wolverton catches while standing.

Akron leads 1-0 at halftime. 


Penn State junior Julian Cardona gets a red card for a hard foul against Gallego in the 50th minute. Cardona, the Nittany Lions leading scorer, is ejected from the match.

Barson executed a bicycle kick with the ball flying towards the goal, but Wolverton caught the ball.

UA senior Luke Holmes enters the lineup as a reserve with about 20 minutes to go in the match. Quinn subs out.

A scrum in front of Meves resulted in Barson getting kicked in the face. He is down on the pitch.

Zips senior Matt Dagilis enters the lineup with 12 and a half minutes to go in the match. Barson got up, walked subbed out on his own feet.

Barson re-enters the Zips lineup for Dagilis with seven and a half minutes to go in the match.

Another wild scum ensued in front of the Zips goal in the 89th minute. PSU had a chance at a goal, but UA was able to clear the ball away.

Wolverton sent the ball in with his foot from a little bit past midfield. The ball went wide left of the UA goal with 14 seconds to go in the match.

Meves got knocked down. He is up and ready to play.

It's over. Akron wins 1-0.
