LIVE: No. 4 Akron defeats Ohio State 3-1 in men's soccer

The Ohio State University vs. The University of Akron

Wednesday night men's soccer match from FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field

Akron Starting Lineup

Goalkeeper: Junior David Meves.

Defenders: Junior Chad Barson, sophomore Eric Stevenson, freshman Bryan Gallego and freshman DeAndre Yedlin.

Midfielders: Junior Scott Caldwell, senior Michael Balogun and freshman Wil Trapp.

Forwards: Sophomore Darren Mattocks, sophomore Aodhan Quinn and junior Thomas Schmitt.

The Buckeyes have a 5-3-1 overall record. The Zips have a 5-0-2 overall record.

FIRST HALF

The score is 0-0 after 15 minutes of play.

Junior Eric Stevenson went down with an injury in the 17th minute. Freshman David Mayer enters the Zips lineup as a reserve.

AKRON 1-0

Freshman DeAndre Yedlin scores a goal in the 21st minute to give UA a 1-0 lead. Yedlin dribbled between two OSU defenders and then took a shot. The ball deflected off Buckeyes junior goalkeeper Matt Lampson, who was off balance, and then rolled off a post and into the net.

 This is Yedlin's first collegiate goal.

Schmitt goes down and returns to play.

With 11:05 remaining in the first half senior Luke Holmes subs into the Zips lineup for Schmitt. This is Holmes' UA debut.

Holmes goes down, but pops up and continues to play.

Mattocks goes down, but pops up and continues to play.

AKRON LEADS 1-0 AT HALFTIME

SECOND HALF

Stevenson returns to the UA lineup.

Yedlin clears a shot on the line by OSU senior midfielder Parnell Hegngi that went past Meves.

OSU continues to play physical and getting called for fouls as UA players fall to the pitch on hard challenges.

The Buckeyes currently have four yellow cards.

AKRON 2-0

Schmitt scores a goal to lift the Zips advantage to 2-0 in the 69th minute. Holmes took the initial shot on the scoring play, which was saved by Lampson. Schmitt collected the rebound and kicked the ball into the net.

AKRON 2-1

Buckeyes junior midfielder Sebastian Rivas nets a goal in the 74th minute to make the score 2-1.

Zac Portillos enters the Zips lineup with about nine minutes remaining in the match.

AKRON 3-1

Holmes scores his first goal as a Zips player in the 82nd minute to extend the lead to 3-1. He used some fancy dribbling and then fired a shot that went past Lampson, off the cross bar and then into the net. Trapp got the assist.
