The Akron Zips football team has been tabbed to finish second in the Mid-American Conference East Division by the members of the MAC media, the league office announced on Wednesday prior to its annual Football Media Day at Ford Field.
The Zips earned 114 total points, including three first-place votes, as defending MAC Champion Bowling Green was tabbed as the division favorites. The Falcons earned 144 total points and 18 first-place votes.
Following the Falcons and Zips were Ohio (107), Buffalo (87), Kent State (72), Miami (Ohio) (43) and Massachusetts (23).
In the West Division, Toledo was selected as the favorite by a slim four-point margin, earning 114 total points and receiving 11 first-place votes. Northern Illinois was picked second (110 points, eight first-place votes), followed by Ball State (82), Central Michigan (67 points, two first-place votes), Western Michigan (44 points) and Eastern Michigan (24 points).
A total of five teams received votes as the media's pick to win the 2014 Marathon MAC Championship game (December 5, Ford Field). BGSU received 11 votes, followed by Toledo (6), Central Michigan (2), Akron (1) and Northern Illinois (1).
The Zips, who posted their highest win total since 2008 by going 5-7 overall and 4-4 against the MAC last season, as well as ending the year by winning three-straight and four of their last five games, open the season on Thursday, Aug. 28, against Howard at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field (7 p.m. ET).
Akron will play host to MAC-favorite Bowling Green on Tuesday, Nov. 4, before a national audience on either ESNP2 or ESPNU.
