The top-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team defeated host Cincinnati 3-0 Sunday afternoon on the final day of the adidas Bearcat Classic at Gettler Stadium.
The Zips (4-0-0) won the tournament and had four players — freshman defender Chad Barson, junior midfielder Blair Gavin, freshman forward Yoram Mwila and sophomore forward Teal Bunbury — named to the all-tournament team.
UA scored an own goal 17:25 into the first half. Sophomore Michael Nanchoff scored a goal in the 81st minute and Mwila scored in the 82nd minute. Freshman Ben Speas assisted on Nanchoff and Mwila's goals.
UA, ranked No. 1 in the nation by four polls, including National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas and Soccer America , held an advantage over UC in shots (21-5), shots on goal (13-2) and corner kicks (7-3) when the game ended.
Freshman David Meves was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper of the tournament, Gavin earned the Most Valuable Midfielder honor and Mwila received the Most Valuable Forward accolade.
Barson, freshman Zarek Valentin, sophomore Kofi Sarkodie and junior Chris Korb formed the Zips starting lineup defensively and registered their third shutout together .
In the first half, UA held an advantage over UC in shots (14-1), shots on goal (9-0) and corner kicks (5-1).
UA is 33-0-0 after having a halftime lead under fourth-year coach Caleb Porter.
The Zips will host the UA Tournament at Lee Jackson Field this weekend. UA plays No. 12 Indiana at 7:30 p.m. Friday and St. Louis at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
