Ohio ran the ball. Akron could not.
In short, that is why the Bobcats won the MAC East Championship.
You can point at bad calls by the refs. They could say fumbles played a large part. In the end, the ground game was the biggest discrepancy.
Kalvin McRae ran for 130 yards. Dennis Kennedy only scampered for 28. Luke Getsy played poorly, completing only 21 of 43 attempts. He threw two interceptions and one touchdown. In fairness, Getsy was always on the run, which certainly isn't in his repertoire. On the other side, Ohio signal caller Austen Everson only threw for 50 yards.
Teams blitzing Akron's quarterback has been a theme this season. It makes me wonder how you can prevent that, without infusing better talent. Or maybe you just counteract it. Just because J.D. Brookhart runs a 3-3-5 defense doesn't mean he can't send a few blitzers, especially with all the playmakers on defense. Rather, the Zips are near the bottom of the MAC in sacks.
It's been a while since a Zips game hasn't mattered. We'll see how Friday goes.
I'll have more tomorrow.
