A lot of you hardcore, well-intentioned Zips fans absolutely abhor the Akron Beacon Journal.
Over the years, you've seen the Buckeyes on the Sunday sports section, with just a small tribute to the Zips.
Today, Sept. 10, 2006, is the end of that. At the top right corner of A1, the Zips have a huge teaser. On the sports front page, Akron is the centerpiece and easily beats Ohio State in real estate.
Talking with Beacon Journal sports writers, I know this is part of a serious commitment. They want to focus almost exclusively on Summit County. It's no mistake on a day Ohio State won its biggest non-bowl game in many years that the Akron coverage trumped it.
And being completely objective, the Ohio State win is bigger news -- not only nationally, but also in the Akron community. I'm sorry to report the obvious, but the Buckeyes are No. 1, in the polls and in living rooms around Summit County.
This decision shows how the philosophy has changed. So next time you call the Beacon Journal the "leaking urinal," consider that the paper might be catering more to your sports needs than you think.
