Quarterfinal preview

By mrasor Published: March 8, 2007

Men's basketball

Akron displayed its worst defensive showing of the year when Central Michigan visited Rhodes Arena on Feb. 7.

The Zips won, 78-71, but allowed the Chippewas to shoot 58.7 percent from the field.

Much of the scoring came from Giordan Watson, the league's best point guard. Akron reverted to a zone defense to stop Watson's penetration. It allowed the Zips to rebuild a lead and win.

  • The line is Akron minus 13 with the over-under at 137.

  • Danny Sheridan says the Zips will win by 12.5.

The athletic Chippewas usually play a physical game. Look for Romeo Travis and Nick Dials to have big nights.

I think Akron will have a plan to stop Watson. There's also no way the Chippewas shoot 58 percent again. Akron wins, but it's close for awhile.

Prediction: Zips 81, Chips 64

In other MAC action...

  • Toledo held off Eastern Michigan to win 62-54.

  • Miami knocked off Ohio, 70-51. (This is a real shock to me. OU was my sleeper team. This game completely destroys my MAC Tournament bracket.)

  • The Zips/Chips game starts at 7.

  • Western Michigan/Kent State begins at 9.
