Recruiting update

By mrasor Published: January 22, 2006

From, here are some targets of Akron's coaches.

Receivers coach, co-offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead

  • Two-star pro-style quarterback Tyler Huether

  • Inside linebacker Keith Yager from Hermitage, Pa.

  • Two-star pro-style quarterback Desmond Brently (although a news source reported that Akron withdrew its scholarship offer)

Tight ends coach Mark Nori

  • Two-star pro-style quarterback Brennan Glass from Springfield, Ohio

Offensive line coach Brian Callahan

  • Two-star inside linebacker Connor Flahive from Niles, Ill.

  • Three-star offensive guard Brandon Frey from Lombard, Ill. (lots of competition from the Big 10 and other schools)

  • Two-star running back Elijah Griffin from Westerville, Ohio (competition includes Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Bowling Green, Miami, Toledo)

  • Two-star wide receiver Sean Hughes from Bolingbrook, Ill. (Ivy League and three Big 10 schools also in running)

  • Two-star running back Bill McKeon from Joliet, Ill. (competition includes directional Michigans, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin)

  • Unrated inside linebacker Tommie Westbrook from Chicago

Defensive line coach Terrell Williams

  • Two-star defensive back Shannon Ballard from Miami, Fla.

Cornerbacks coach Aaron Alford

  • Two-star athlete Ryan Callahan from Glen Burnie, Md.

  • Two-star defensive tackle Colin Miller from Centreville, Va.

  • Two-star linebacker Eric Schwartz from Clyde, Ohio (has interest in Ohio State, too)

Linebackers coach Matt Wallerstedt

  • Two-star athlete Zachary Davis from Middletown, Ohio (only other D-1A competition is Buffalo, yet he runs a 4.28 in the 40)

Hopefully that info satisfies you recruiting maniacs. Signing day is only a week from now on Feb. 1.

Also, news on another Callahan recruit. reports that two-star wide receiver Taylor Price decommitted from Akron. He will play at -- take a deep breath -- Ohio University. That's interesting. I wonder if Ohio's basketball coaches are helping with football recruiting.

And in case any of you care, like I do, the Indians will trade Coco Crisp to Boston for third-base super-prospect Andy Marte and reliever Guillermo Mota. I like the deal a lot.
