Zips men's basketball team picked to win MAC East & Tournament titles again

CLEVELAND – The Akron Zips men's basketball team has been tabbed as the favorites in the Mid-American Conference East Division and the MAC Tournament in the 2013-14 MAC Basketball Preseason poll, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Zips women's basketball team picked to repeat as MAC East champion

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron women's basketball team was picked to repeat as Mid-American Conference East Division champions in the 2013-14 MAC Preseason Poll selected by the league's head coaches. The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.

Football: Ball State beats Zips 42-24

A brisk wind roiled around InfoCision Stadium Saturday complementing an unreasonable October chill putting the Akron Zips offense on ice – excepting running back Jawon Chisholm - for much of their game against the Ball State Cardinals.

A thaw eventually came, but it did so late leading to a Cardinals 42-24 win over UA.

Zips football: 3 & Out - A look at Ball State

This week’s Three-and-Out comes courtesy of Ben Breiner of The Star Press in Muncie, Ind.:

First down: Ball State had turned up its passing game this season in a big way. Despite the sense the Cardinals were an up-and-down spread team, last year they were fairly balanced between run and pass, averaging more than 200 yards on the ground. This year with a less experienced offensive line, they've unleashed Keith Wenning full force, and he is on track for a number of records, throwing to WRs Willie Snead, Jordan Williams and Jamill Smith. RB Jahwan Edwards has been productive in spots, but not to the level he reached a season ago.

Zips women's hoops: King lost for the season

From a University Akron news release:  University of Akron women's basketball head coach Jodi Kest announced on Tuesday that senior forward Sina King will sit out the 2013-14 season due to medical reasons.

King is currently being treated and monitored for blood clots, which will sideline her for at least six months. Her condition will be re-evaluated at the end of the scheduled treatment period.

Zips reveal conference hoops schedule

From a UA athletic department news release: The University of Akron men's and women's basketball teams will make 10 guaranteed television appearances during conference play, with the possibility of four additional TV opportunities, the Mid-American Conference and Zips Athletics announced on Tuesday.

The MAC TV package includes 55 scheduled games, the largest men's and women's television package in league history. In addition, there will be 15 men's basketball games aired live on ESPN branded networks.

MAC, ESPN team for another bowl game

From the Mid-American Conference offices:  

CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced today the creation of a newly created bowl game in Boca Raton, Fla. for a six-year period (2014-2019), which will be owned and operated by ESPN.  The Boca Raton Bowl will be a pre-Christmas bowl game and will be televised nationally on ESPN or ESPN2.  The Boca Raton Bowl will be played at FAU Stadium, an open-air stadium opened in 2011 which seats nearly 30,000 fans on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.

Standout Cincinnati track athlete takes visit to UA

Cincinnati La Salle standout track and field athlete Tim Bell took an official visit to Akron this past weekend, according to Cincinnati.com.

Bell – the Greater Catholic League South Field Athlete of the Year last spring – is one of the top returning long jumpers in the state for next spring. He also plans to take an official visit to Kent State soon. He was to visit Cincinnati this week too.

BOSTON University of Akron senior forward Demetrius "Tree" Treadwell has been named to the 2013 Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team, CollegeInsider.com announced on Wednesday.
