Sako advances, throwers do not
Track
Natalie Sako appears to be headed to the finals after finishing 11th in the women's high jump. The tracking Web site indicates that the top 12 move on.
Randall Hafner and Auston Papay, whose spectacular performances at regionals surprised many, did not duplicate that in the discus at nationals, finishing 23nd and 25th, respectively, out of 25.
I know for a fact that coach Dennis Mitchell is thrilled that Hafner, a junior, and Papay, a sophomore, advanced as far as they did.
John Russell, Tomasz Smialek and Ashley Kaufman advanced to finals earlier in the day. When you add Sako to that list, Mitchell has to be more than thrilled at today's results.
I hope to hear from him later tonight. I'll post his thoughts tomorrow.
