University of Akron Zips blog launches Akron site

By mrasor Published: June 25, 2008

Football launched in hopes to increase membership and provide a steady base of Akron news.
I will be a contributing writer every so often, but Bob Lichtenfels is doing most of the work to get the site off the ground.
Please consider visiting the site, take the seven-day trial, and perhaps become a member for about $100 a year. There is a lot of good information, and it's nice to have Scout recognize the growth of the Zips' fan base.
One interesting story is about top junior college cornerback Chaz Russell, who is considering Akron.

    Some new scholarship offers...
Aaron Mershman, pro-style quarterback, Bowling Green, Ohio Offers: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Western Michigan Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 190 Speed: 4.7 Notes: Mershman, who models his game after Tim Tebow, hopes to get some Big Ten attention. Like Tebow, he can be a power runner at times. It's a safe bet this guy will be starting somewhere in the MAC in a few years.
Chaz Russell, cornerback, Los Angeles (Pierce C.C.) Offers: Akron, Memphis and Middle Tennessee Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 Speed: 4.4 Notes: Russell originally gave a soft verbal commitment to Memphis, but it appears he backed out. He might also play receiver, punt returner or kick returner.
Dylan Farrington, defensive end, Adrian, Mich. Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Indiana Height: 6-5 Weight: 217 Speed: 4.65 Notes: Michigan and USC are his favorites, but those teams aren't knocking down his door. Still, Farrington is quite an athlete, and gives him three stars.
John Prior, offensive tackle, Portsmouth, Ohio Offers: Akron, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, N.C. State, Purdue, Syracuse, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Kent State, Marshall and Ohio Height: 6-6 Weight: 283 Speed: Not listed Notes: Florida State is Prior's favorite. Akron is not in the top five.
Trey Smith, wide receiver, Perry, Ga. Offers: Akron, Ball State, Kent State and Western Michigan Height: 6-5 Weight: 208 Speed: 4.65 Notes: With good hands and solid blocking ability, Smith might wind up at tight end. If he really runs a 4.65, I'd be surprised to see him convert. It's funny to see all these MAC schools traveling to Georgia. I suppose it's trendy nowadays.
Jacoby Mitchell, wide receiver, Decatur, Ga. Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Western Kentucky Height: 6-1 Weight: 180 Speed: 4.5 Notes: Bowling Green is Mitchell's favorite right now because the Falcon coaches were the first to really recruit him.
Marquis Miller, wide receiver, North Chicago, Ill. Offers: Akron Height: 5-11 Weight: 163 Speed: Not listed Notes: Coach Brian Callahan recently extended this offer to Miller. He also has interest in Colorado, Purdue, Ball State and Western Michigan. (I love seeing a receiver who is my size and weight. He better be one shifty dude.)
Mark Mays, running back, Clayton, Ohio Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio Height: 5-9 Weight: 170 Speed: Not listed Notes: Mays almost landed in's list of Ohio's top 10 running backs. His highlight video makes him look like a slippery back to tackle.
Ted Bolser, wide receiver, Cincinnati Offers: Akron, Kentucky, Louisville and Indiana Height: 6-5 Weight: 212 Speed: 4.63 Notes: Bolser is No. 2 on's list of Ohio's top tight ends. Despite the Big East, Big Ten and SEC offer, Bolser wants to go somewhere he can play.
Charles Holmes, wide receiver, Rock Hill, S.C. Offers: Akron, South Carolina and Buffalo Height: 6-4 Weight: 197 Speed: 4.55 Notes: As you might expect, the Gamecocks top Holmes' list. However, it is important for him to receive early playing time, so Akron has a chance.
Michael Colvin, dual-threat quarterback, Morristown, N.J. Offers: Akron and Buffalo Height: 6-2 Weight: 195 Speed: Not listed Notes: Colvin has visited Rutgers and Syracuse. He ran for 800 yards and passed for 1,000 last season.
