Some basketball notes

Men's basketball

While perusing ZipsNation.org, I found some interesting internet stories. First, the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote about Bubba Walther's transfer to Ohio, a development first mentioned on this blog. Walther said all the right things. However, I'd expect him to get a cold reception on Feb. 25 if he's in street clothes at Rhodes Arena. Or better yet, next season when he's allowed to suit up for the Bobcats.

Yahoo! Sports gave the Zips some serious props when Clark Kellogg chose his Cinderella candidates. Romeo Travis was displayed at the top of their college basketball home page. I'm shocked a former Buckeye knows there's another university in Ohio. In fact, Kellogg also mentioned Ohio, Xavier and Miami as candidates.

Here are some MAC rankings I found. One says the Zips are tops. The other says Ohio is still first; Akron is second.

The Zips are playing the MAC West's worst teams this week in Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. Their division rivals are not so lucky, especially Ohio and Kent State...

  • Miami (5-0) plays Toledo at home, then at Western Michigan.

  • Ohio (4-0) plays at Northern Illinois, then at Toledo.

  • Kent State (4-0) plays Western Michigan, then at Northern Illinois.

  • Buffalo (2-2) plays Ball State at home, then Central Michigan at home.

  • Akron (4-0), meanwhile, plays at Central Michigan, then Eastern Michigan at home.

The Ohio/NIU and KSU/WMU games are tonight.

A FoxSports.com writer predicted the field of 65. He said Akron would be one of the last five out of the tourney, and Miami will win the MAC. Seems unlikely to me, but I've seen stranger predictions.
