Three Zips make Academic All-MAC

From a MAC news release:  The Mid-American Conference announced its 2013 Football Academic All-MAC team as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions.  A total of 41 student-athletes were named to the 2013 Academic All-MAC team.  

Bowling Green (Tyler Beck, Ronnie Goble, David ‘Chief’ Kekuewa, Chris Pohlman, Tyler Tate) topped the 2013 Academic All-MAC squad with five selections.

Central Michigan (Connor Collins, Richie Hogan, Connor Odykirk, Cooper Rush), Kent State (Matt Dellinger, Jordan Italiano, Anthony Meray, Nate Vance), Northern Illinois (Jacob Brinlee, Ricky Connors, Rob Sterling, Dominique Ware) and Toledo (Jeremiah Detmer, Zac Kerin, Greg Mancz, Matt Wall) followed with four Academic All-MAC selections each.

Akron (Nico Caponi, Kyle Pohl, Robert Stein), Buffalo (Tyler Grassman, Alex Neutz, Colby Way), Eastern Michigan (Jake Hurcombe, Cy Maughmer, Dylan Mulder), Ohio (Travis Carrie, Josh Kristoff, Kurt Laseak)  and UMass (Devin Brown, Matt Sparks, Jeff Strait) all had three Academic All-MAC selections.

Ball State (Zane Fakes, Jacob Richard), Miami (Kent Kern, Mason Krysinski) and Western Michigan (Kyle Lark) rounded out the selections.

Three-time selections include Alex Neutz (Buffalo), Colby Way (Buffalo), Mason Krysinski (Miami), Zac Kerin (Toledo).

Two-time selections include Robert Stein (Akron), Zane Fakes (Ball State), Jacob Richard (Ball State), Tyler Beck (Bowling Green), Tyler Tate (Bowling Green), Richie Hogan (Central Michigan), Anthony Meray (Kent State), Rob Sterling (Northern Illinois), Jeremiah Detmer (Toledo), Greg Mancz (Toledo) and Matt Wall (Toledo).

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics.  To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.  First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC team is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.  The remaining student-athletes have been recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections.
