Three players have transferred from the team, including point guard Ronnie Steward, according to a team source.
Steve Swiech and Alex Sullivan also chose to transfer, but Steward is the surprise among the three, because he had been earning more minutes after recovering from a leg injury last season.
The team added a point guard from Puerto Rico to potentially take Steward's spot in the lineup. Five-foot-9 guard Alex Abreu signed a letter of intent, the university announced today.
Here is what's press release says about the new addition:

Abreu currently attends Central Jersey Each One Teach One Academy (CJEOTO), a prep school located in Somerset, N.J.
A 5-foot-9, 175-pound guard from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Abreu averaged 14 points and nine assists this season and was a First-Team All-New Jersey Prep honoree. He transitioned to CJEOTO after attending Bayamon Military Academy for four years.
Abreu was also a member of the Under-19 Puerto Rican National Team, which posted a 5-4 record and finished sixth in a 16-team field at the 2009 FIBA World Championship in New Zealand last July.
"We are excited to add Alex to our team," Dambrot said. "He is a versatile guard and has played at a very high level of the game internationally. He has a good shooting stroke, tremendous feel for the game and the ability to make others better. He also comes from a great family and is a high-character person – things that are first and foremost in our recruiting philosophy."

Below is a brief highlight video of Abreu. It shows a guard who can slash, finish, dish, play defense and shoot.

With the departure of the three transfers and two seniors ( Jimmy Conyers and Chris McKnight), Akron has five open scholarships. Abreu and the other three recruits will account for four of them. Barring another signee, guard Darryl Roberts will use the fifth scholarship, after playing his prior three years as one of the most productive walk-ons in the country.
