UA men’s soccer roster continues to evolve
The University of Akron men’s soccer roster continues to evolve.
Ben Speas and Martin Ontiveros are the most recent players who have left UA. They join McKauly Tulloch, Gabriel Genovesi, Richard Diaz. Jr. and Diego Navarrete who also decided to leave the program.
Zips coach Caleb Porter was unavailable for comment. He is out of the country on a recruiting trip.
Speas, a Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy graduate and Stow native, played two seasons for UA and contributed to the 2010 national title team by appearing in all 25 matches. Ontiveros and Tulloch were freshmen this past season and played in 12 and 10 matches, respectively.
Genovesi and Diaz redshirted last season and Navarrete joined the team in January. Genovesi competes for the Zips track and field team, which won the Mid-American Conference title on Saturday.
UA had seven players drafted from the team into Major League Soccer in January: Darlington Nagbe, Perry Kitchen, Zarek Valentin, Kofi Sarkodie, Michael Nanchoff, Chris Korb and Anthony Ampaipitakwong.
The Zips had 18 players appear in 10 or more matches last season, and now 10 are gone.
Darren Mattocks, Scott Caldwell, Chad Barson and David Meves are the four returning starters. Michael Balogun, Thomas Schmitt, Reinaldo Brenes and Eric Stevenson are returning reserves that played in 10 or more matches.
