It's that time of the year again -- the time when you forget all about college sports. Either that, or you hang on every minuscule news nugget you can find.
If you are in the latter camp, here is an interesting story: The athletic department is throwing a "preview party" for the redesign of the new GoZips.com next Thursday evening.
Having a party for a Web site just struck me as cheesy, I guess. Maybe it's normal in the industry.
Those Zips fans who hang on every news nugget are generally most interested in recruiting this time of year. (As some of you may know, I swore off this practice as being far too time consuming and much too meaningless to football outcomes.)
But one piece of news is notable: Buchtel receiver Corey Smith will have to play junior college before making it to Division I.
The only other four-star prospect that Akron is pursuing is also local, defensive end Tom Strobel from Mentor. He has 14 offers, including one from the Buckeyes.
Akron has made 38 scholarship offers on 2012 recruits to date, according to Rivals.com.
