Who owns the East?

By mrasor Published: October 20, 2008

We are eight games into the season, and it's difficult to rule out anyone from the MAC East.
Akron leads the division at 2-2, but four teams are ready to tie the standings at 1-2. Even Kent State (0-3) and Temple (1-3) are alive because a 5-3 conference record is probably good enough to earn a tiebreaker in the East.

So who has the inside track? It's best to examine the schedules...
Akron (2-2) Remaining schedule: Toledo, Buffalo, @ Ohio, @ Temple Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 31% Road/home games: 2/2 Predicted finish: 4-4
Bowling Green (1-2) Remaining schedule: @ Northern Illinois, Kent State, @ Ohio, Buffalo, @ Toledo Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 38% Road/home games: 3/2 Predicted finish: 4-4
Buffalo (1-2) Remaining schedule: @ Ohio, Miami, @ Akron, @ Bowling Green, Kent State Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 31% Road/home games: 3/2 Predicted finish: 3-5
Miami (1-2) Remaining schedule: Kent State, @ Buffalo, Ball State, @ Toledo, Ohio Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 40% Road/home games: 2/3 Predicted finish: 3-5
Ohio (1-2) Remaining schedule: @ Temple, Buffalo, Bowling Green, Akron, @ Miami Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 35% Road/home games: 2/3 Predicted finish: 3-5
Temple (1-3) Remaining schedule: Ohio, (@ Navy), @ Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Akron MAC opponents' MAC winning percentage: 29% Road/home MAC games: 2/2 Predicted finish: 3-5
Kent State (0-3) Remaining schedule: @ Miami, @ Bowling Green, Temple, Northern Illinois, @ Buffalo Opponents' MAC winning percentage: 41% Road/home games: 3/2 Predicted finish: 1-7

Under this scenario, Bowling Green gets the tiebreaker. Akron fans need to root hardest for the Falcons to lose because of their head-to-head win at the Rubber Bowl. A three-way tie would make that game less meaningful. However, I think the Zips will win the East outright if they can finish the season by winning three of four.
    New scholarship offerees...
Cody Muller, defensive end, Souderton, Pa. Offers: Akron Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 227 Speed: 4.6 Notes: He wants to play at a school that really wants him. Winning is not important, as long as the team is moving toward success. Many Big East teams are interested in Muller.
Devontae Payne, quarterback, Cleveland (South H.S.) Offers: Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo Height: 6-foot-5 Weight: 220 Speed: Not listed Notes: calls him the No. 113 quarterback in the nation. gives him three stars. Akron is the leader so far, Payne said.
