Youngstown DE commits to Akron

Coach J.D. Brookhart received his third verbal commitment from a defensive end today.

Marquinn Davis, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound speedster, from Youngstown, chose Akron, although it appears the Zips were the only Division I school to offer Davis a scholarship.

Scout.com does not list Davis. Rivals.com barely has any information on him, except his 4.6 speed, which is exceptional for a player Davis' size.

A poster on ZipsNation.org found this video of Davis, although he plays offensive tackle in most clips. I didn't see anything too outstanding on the defensive plays, but his speed was clearly enough to intrigue the Zips coaches.

Signing Day is only a couple weeks away. Here are some Rivals.com updates some players who are mulling Zips scholarship offers...

  • Bryan Williams, a three-star safety from Pennsylvania, originally committed to Pittsburgh last year, but had issues with the NCAA Clearinghouse. He appears headed to Dave Wannstedt anyhow.

  • Four other schools have taken interest in Canton McKinley running back Morgan Williams. Florida State, Louisville, Wisconsin and Toledo join Indiana and Akron for the back's services. Williams still only holds offers from the Zips and Hoosiers.

  • From the list of current offers on the table, it appears Akron would like to add a running back, another defensive linemen (probably a tackle) and a safety.
