Zips basketball: Marshall barnstorms through NBA

Former Akron Zips center Zeke Marshall didn’t participate in the NBA Draft Combine. That, however, doesn’t mean there is no interest in the seven-footer who wrapped his career this past season.

Marshall worked out with the Dallas Mavericks today and has a series of workouts slated in the coming days, according to a source close to the hoopster.

Colorado QB Nick Hirschman to transfer to Akron; will be given a chance to start

A source close to the Akron football program confirmed to the Beacon Journal earlier reports that Colorado quarterback Nick Hirschman is transferring to the Zips. 

Hirschman was 55-93 passing (59.1 percent) for 589 yards and threw two touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. In four Colorado spring scrimmages, he threw seven touchdowns and one interception on 32-of-52 passing (61.5 percent).

Akron set to compete in Hawaii men's basketball event

The University of Akron is the eighth and final men’s basketball team to join the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic field, according to the University of Hawaii athletic website.

The event also includes Boise State, George Mason, Iowa State, Saint Mary’s, Oregon State, South Carolina and host school Hawaii. The tournament is set to be played on Dec. 22, 23 and 25, at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The three game dates are Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.

Zips select women's swimming and diving coach

AKRON, OhioBrian Peresie was named head coach of The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team, Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill announced on Thursday. The appointment is pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees.
"We are excited to welcome Brian and his family into the Zips Athletics family," Wistrcill said. "He brings great passion to our program and is connected to the Northeast Ohio swimming and diving community. Brian is also well acquainted with the Mid-American Conference from his time coaching at Ohio University. I look forward to watching our program grow under his leadership."
Peresie, who spent the last two seasons as head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving program at nearby Malone University, will officially begin his duties at Akron on May 6. In 2012-13 as provisional members of the NCAA Division II, his student-athletes set more than 90 school records, after having done so more than 60 times during the 2011-12 campaign. Peresie reinstated the Pioneers' diving program in 2012-13.  
"It is an honor to be taking the helm of the Zips program," Peresie said. "There is unlimited potential for success as the University has heavily invested in creating an amazing student-athlete experience. This athletics department is full of outstanding people and has the framework in place for the swimming and diving program to be great. I feel right at home in the MAC and am thrilled to have this opportunity."  
During the eight years prior to his time at Malone, Peresie served as assistant swimming coach and recruiting coordinator at Ohio University. The Bobcats women's team won a Mid-American Conference championship in 2008 and 2011, and finished in second place at the league championship meet four times and third place twice.

Cincinnati guard Ricardo Hill Jr. added as preferred walk-on with Zips

Cincinnati Walnut Hills senior guard Ricardo Hill Jr. has accepted a preferred walk-on opportunity at Akron, according to

Junior, who is 5 feet 10, was a starter on Walnut Hills' state semifinalist team this past season. He was a Cincinnati Enquirer Division I honorable mention selection.
