Zips admit looking past WSSU
Men's basketball
At least the Zips are honest.
There's no other explanation for their first-half performance against Winston-Salem State than they overlooked the 1-11 Rams.
Cedrick Middleton said Akron took WSSU for granted in Tom Gaffney's ABJ game story. Dru Joyce added the Zips had their heads in the sky after three road victories in Elton Alexander's PD game story.
Is that troubling? Maybe a little. But as a player or coach, how would you inspire yourself to have a peak performance after a tough road trip, and before a challenging home stand? Especially when the opponent might be the worst Division I team in the country.
If the Zips played like that against almost any MAC foe, they would lose. Hopefully it's a lesson learned.
