Zips football: Running back by committee

By George Thomas Published: September 24, 2012

Running back Quentin Hines kinda, sorta complicated things at that position with his rather conspicuous outburst Saturday night.

His 75-yard dash showed the dash of explosiveness that coach Terry Bowden has been looking for since the beginning of preseason camp.

Zips football: About that Dalton Williams snub

By George Thomas Published: September 17, 2012

I understand why the MAC chose Ohio’s Tyler Tettleton as the East Division’s Offensive Player of the Week over the Zips Dalton Williams.

You lead your team to a come-from-behind win to maintain you r undefeated status then you’ve earned some consideration, especially when you add three scores to it.

Close but no player of the week for Williams

By George Thomas Published: September 17, 2012

Given the sheer numbers involved in quarterback Dalton Williams' performance Saturday, it seemed as he’d be a lock for a second consecutive East Division Player of the Week in the conference.  Not so.

This weeks’ award went to Ohio’s quarterback, Tyler Tettleton, who completed 20-of-35 passes for 200 yards to nine different receivers and three TDs.  The reason the conference bestowed the award on him?  More than likely the level of competition involved.

Zips football: Observations from Saturday's game

By George Thomas Published: September 15, 2012

It was a Division 1-AA team, but the Akron Zips took a step forward nonetheless.

However, they get about 48 hours to enjoy because coach Terry Bowden gets to show the team his SEC roots when he takes them to Tennessee next week and as enjoyable as the victory was, the Zips will have to play a perfect game next week to even be in it.

Zips football: A couple of small notes

By George Thomas Published: September 13, 2012

That offensive player of the week award for quarterback Dalton Williams isn't a fluke as far as his receivers go.  Senior receiver Marqelo Suel is currently ranked fourth in the conference with 14 receptions in just two games, a fact he attributes to quarterback Dalton Williams

“It's a real big difference.  It starts with the (offensive) line then the quarterback.  If the quarterback can't get you the ball, you can't do nothing,” he said.

Zips hoops: Betancourt showing out on court

By George Thomas Published: September 5, 2012

For anyone who remembers the Zips’ painful 64-63 loss to Ohio in last season’s MAC Tournament championship game, the experience could be painful.  In the end victory was simple:  control point guard D.J. Cooper and the game, championship and trip to the big dance belonged to UA. Eventually the Zips had to watch the Bobcats go on an impressive run in the tourney.

There wasn’t a lot of good to take from Thursday’s game, but there’s little doubt that Zips noseguard and hometown guy Cody Grice made an impression on the coaching staff with his stellar performance against Central Florida.
