Zips basketball: UA falls to Purdue in tournament opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.:  The University of Akron women’s basketball team opened their first ever NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship game hitting on 1-of-7 of their first shots against Purdue Boilermakers, helping them to take an 20-2 lead.

Although the Zips dashed back at one point to cut the lead to 10, they couldn’t get over that substantial hump and lost to Purdue 84-55 ending a memorable season.

Zips basketball: Women get presidential seal in tournament

The University of Akron women’s basketball team doesn’t appear to be getting wrapped in the hype of playing in their first NCAA Tournament.

After winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament last week, seniors Rachel Tecca, Hanna Luburgh and Kacie Cassell were asked why they took a chance on playing for the Zips.  The simple answer:  bigger colleges passed them over. They were asked if this is a chance for them to prove themselves and did it offer more motivation in taking on a Big Ten opponent such as Purdue.

Zips women's basketball: UA plays at Purdue on Saturday in first round of NCAA Tournament

The University of Akron women’s team will go to West Lafayette, Ind., to play the Purdue Boilermakers as the Zips make their debut in the NCAA Tournament, it was announced Monday. The game is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

They were forced to play a waiting game as ESPN2 went deep into its broadcast before revealing UA, a No. 13 seed who will play the fourth seed Big Ten team.

Zips women's basketball: UA takes first MAC championship

The University of Akron women’s basketball began the journey last year.  This year they’ve arrived.

The Zips capped a season filled with more records by adding the one that matters most – first Mid-American Conference championship and first trip to the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Zips men's basketball: Broncos erase deficit to beat UA

The University of Akron men’s basketball team ermerged from the locker room at Quicken Loans Arena and played their most focused, determine half of their season.

Everything worked for them.  Inside.  Outside.  Defense. Offense. It led to them giving up 17 points, their fewest in the first half all season.

Zips women's basketball: UA fast break breezes by Central Michigan

The University of Akron women’s basketball team needed to play Central Michigan’s game to get them to play theirs.

Without Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Crystal Bradford, the Chippewas’ high-octane offense turned into something far more deliberate, calculating and pedestrian, allowing the Zips to run away with a 85-69 victory to make it to the tournament finals for the second consecutive year.

Zips men's basketball: UA beats Ohio Bobcats

CLEVELAND: By now it’s cliché that games between the University of Akron men’s basketball team and Ohio University are a cliché.

However, some clichés remain relevant and fun, including the 83-77 win by the Zips against the Bobcats in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena which remained in question until late in the game .

Zips basketball: Women beat Toledo in MAC Tournament quarterfinal

Guard Hanna Luburgh arrived in Cleveland for the Mid-American Conference Tournament and made herself home to the tune of 31 points and eight rebounds.

Its’ the second time that she scored more than 30 points in Quicken Loans Arena and this one led the University of Akron women’s basketball team  to a 83-69 win over the University of Toledo.

Zips football: UA reportedly offers two

Lakewood St. Edward junior WR Alex Stump has reportedly been offered by Akron, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

Stump, who is 6 feet 3 and 190 pounds, also reportedly has offers from Cincinnati, James Madison, Toledo and Western Michigan, according to Scout.com.

Zips basketball: Keys against Buffalo Bulls

The University of Akron men’s team first game against the State University of New York Buffalo felt more like track meet than basketball game.

Defense was at a premium. Actually defense was MIA. And the 186 points scored (96-90 Buffalo) was certainly proved that.
