Zips basketball: Notes from women's Tuesday win

By George Thomas Published: November 12, 2013

The Akron Zips 118-71win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles allowed coach Jodi Kest the luxury of getting to see what her bench players can do and coach them in a game situation. At one point during the rout in the second half the Golden Eagles starters came up with a 10-0 run to cut a 50-point lead down to 40.  Kest caused a timeout to encourage her bench players to win the game’s final minutes.

“They scored 10 points so you want to stop the momentum and these kids are having opportunities to play and they have to take advantage of it,” she said. “We have a really good starting team.  We have a really good seven, but we need more depth.  These are those opportunities that when you get on the floor, if you’re the floor general you have to run the show.  If you’re a post player you need rebounds.  This is your opportunity to showcase your talent so I can look at you say maybe I need to play you more.”

Road warriors

The Zips will spend the weekend in the Dayton area where they have games against the nationally ranked Dayton Flyers on Friday and Wright State on Sunday.  Those two games are part of a five-game stretch when they will play away from Rhodes Arena.  The Zips have done themselves a favor by going 2-0 to start the season.  They have momentum and confidence.

“It means everything.  You have to take care of business at home…,” Kest said. “We’re always about one game at a time.  It was (Florida Atlantic) and then Tennessee Tech today.  The kids are going to enjoy it.  The coaches are going to watch a lot of tape the next few days then it’s about Dayton.  We took care of business at home, now it’s about one game at a time on the road.”
