Zips basketball: Three observations and then some

By George Thomas Published: February 9, 2013

Akron 54, Miami 50

  • The bench, which had been averaging better than 25 points per game, was positively woeful this afternoon.  It just goes to show just how off the team was in their 54-50 win versus the RedHawks.  Once again very little offensive flow.  They eventually came around courtesy of a couple of timely threes by freshmen Reggie McAdams and Jake Kretzer during the course of a 15-2 Zips run but overall this was not a good day for bench players overall.
  • Zeke Marshall has to be more aggressive in the paint.  At times he plays too passively near the rim when he’s the most physically imposing player there.  Miami deserves some credit for clogging up the middle somewhat, but that is stuff that Marshall should be able to overcome given his physical advantages.
  • Keith Dambrot issued Demetrius Treadwell a challenge via a compliment after the team’s recent win over Central Michigan when he said that Treadwell is the best player on the Zips.  Those in the media who cover the team with any regularity tend to believe the same.  Here’s betting that Dambrot wants Treadwell to live up to that compliment.  So far so good. I’d argue that the team doesn’t win

Turning point:  Some might say the 15-2 run later in the second half, but I believe the 6-0 run to open the half set the tone for the rest of the game.  It was the team basically saying we took your best shot, here we come.

Player of the game:  Treadwell with his 13 points and six rebounds.  He needs to improve shot selection, but when he’s not afraid to challenge a defender down low and it’s normally a battle he’s going to win.

Quick shots:  The Zips now match a Mid-American Conference start – 10-0 – that goes back 29 years.  And they continue to have the country’s longest winning streak with 15 consecutive.
