Zips basketball: Three observations for UA and OU's rubber match

By George Thomas Published: March 16, 2013

A first:  accused of a bromance for actually acknowledging something that’s true – that coach Keith Dambrot should be considered a wizard for the coaching job he pulled off against Kent State.  Nothing like playing a few guys out of position to bolster the point guard slot, mustering offense to win a huge game with a seventh consecutive appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game on the line.

To not appreciate what Dambrot did to get his team ready in a week after the legal troubles of suspended point guard Alex Abreu would be completely disingenuous.  His status would be elevated were he and his team were able to continue it against Ohio tonight in the championship game.   The Zips swept the regular season games with Abreu, but have yet to face the Bobcats without him.  Here’s what they must do

  • The inside game worked with great success in those two games against Ohio.  Junior forward Demetrius Treadwell averaged 18 points and nine rebounds between the two games. Senior center Zeke Marshall put up 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds between the two contests.  If there is any game this season where the Zips need both of these guys, this is it.  Treadwell keeps his motor idling.  You want the perfect example of who he is as a player.  Look at the steal near the end of the game against Kent State Friday.  Marshall, with his size and strength, could use a little of Treadwell’s nastiness and will in him.
  • Cooper will get his.  It’s inevitable.  It won’t be stopped, but for a change of pace, how about giving Harney and his size at the point to frustrate him? It’s unorthodox, but given the Zips’ current situation.  Harney’s defense has improved greatly throughout the season.  It’s going to be needed here.
  • Lastly, the Zips need to make free throws.  Had they lost against Kent State Friday it would have been for one reason:  shooting 45 percent from the line.  The Zips have little room for error in what they do from here on out.  Not making free throws is a major error.
