Zips basketball: UA seeks multiple paths to tourney
With bracket buster pairings set to be announced tonight, Keith Dambrot checked into whether instead of having a home game, as the Zips are slated to get the weekend of Feb. 22-23, could be on the road, according to a report from ESPN’s Andy Katz.
Call it enlightened self-interest. Dambrot knows that there’s no guarantee that his team will win the season-ending MAC Tournament. Don’t read that as a lack of confidence, but more of a lack of arrogance. Therefore he’s preparing a different path to the NCAA tournament – an at-large bid. In the MAC placing more than one team in the big dance has happened just six times, the most recent being in 1999 when Kent State won the conference and Miami received an invitation.
Playing on the road would likely mean that the Zips are playing a better opponent.
“We thought if we could win a road game it would help our RPI a little bit,” Dambrot said this afternoon.
Right now according to several websites, the Zips RPI sits at 53. The RedHawks' was around that number when they were selected.
