From a UA Athletic Department news release: The University of Akron men's basketball team has been selected to take part in the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon, facing Saint Mary's College at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif., on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 3 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
This is the first time that the Zips have been selected for the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon and Akron is one of two Mid-American Conference teams participating in this year's event (Kent State at Temple). The contest is part of a made-for-TV event that includes more than a dozen games in more than 24 consecutive hours of basketball.
The matchup between the Zips and the Gaels will be the first since UA defeated SMC 71-56 in Akron on Dec. 19, 1973. The contest could be the first of two between the programs as they have the potential to face each other at the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in December (22-25).
Saint Mary's finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 28-7 mark and went 14-2 in West Coast Conference play. The Gaels posted a 1-1 record in the NCAA Tournament, earning a First Four win over Middle Tennessee before falling to Memphis in the second round.
