Zips football: Day 4 camp observations

By George Thomas Published: August 6, 2013

Day four of Akron Zips fall camp livened up just a little bit as the players look acclimated to being back in training.

Defensive lineman Moses McCray, a senior transfer from Florida State, finished the day with his forehead bandaged.   He is business on the field from what could be seen in drills, but when a play is over, it’s over.  He looks to be able to turn the intensity on and off.

McCray and teammate Quaison Osborne got into scraps a couple of times during those drills.  If the intensity of both translates to the field, they will be fun to watch.

Who stood out today:

Offense:

The quarterback competition will be interesting and close as sophomore and presumed starter Kyle Pohl and transfer Nick Hirschman, a senior with two years of eligibility left,  both at times looked impressive.

  • Hirschman completed a 30-yard pass to junior wide receiver L.J. Chambers, a dart thrown on the line perfectly.
  • Pohl, not to be out done, completed a 60-yard catch and run to a wide receiver Dee Frieson for a score.
  • In the running game, junior Jawon Chisholm is already running with strength and power, showing a burst of speed as well.
  • St. Vincent-St. Mary product Franshon Bickley, a freshman, flashed his speed and elusiveness on a couple of plays.

Although the defense showed susceptibility to the big play, something that drives coach Chuck Amato to distraction, some individuals on that unit made an impression in drills and in 11-on-11s.

  • McCray possesses a thunderous and quick first step, getting to a tackling dummy quickly.  He received an opportunity to show that working with the first-team defense as senior Nico Caponi got a break.
  • Alphonso Horner showed strength and speed on the end, getting to Pohl against the first team offense.
  • First-team linebacker Jatavis Brown showed his speed in forcing Hirschman to change the way he threw a screen on the outside.
