Zips football: Practice No. 8 at Camp Zippy

By George Thomas Published: August 10, 2012

Yesterday the offense didn’t have a great day. Today it was the defense’s turn as the offense shredded them in most drills.  Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Quarterback:  Coach Terry Bowden may play more than one QB, but it’s apparent that Dalton Williams has chemistry with multiple receivers.  He was tossing darts this afternoon.  Kyle Pohl had his moments as well, but didn’t look as smooth as Williams.
  • Offense:  The offense frustrated the heck out of the D for much of the afternoon, to the point that there was some jaw jacking going on.  Running back Jawon Chisholm sparked the offense on consecutive plays during goal line drills that would have gone for long runs.  Wide receivers L.T. Smith and Marquelo Suel had nice afternoons as well.
  • Defense: They struggled over all and Chuck Amato noticed it and was none too happy about it.

Turner arrives

Jamel Turner, a four star recruit at linebacker in 2008, who’s overcome ridiculous odds to resume his playing career, took the field for the first time Friday.

Depending upon how long he takes to learn the defense, he could give the team some much needed depth at the position.  If he taps the potential he possessed coming out of high school, he could be a major addition.

“Right now, he's a potential help because at one time, he was a highly recruited in Ohio and we're very fortunate to have him,” Bowden said. “He's one who's going to have to go on sheer talent for a while because he's going to have to learn the defense.”

Amato agreed.

“He can run.  He can move.  He can flip the hips.  He is what they're supposed to look like,” he said. “He's got a lot to learn.  If he's in a game we're going to have to watch what we call.”

Shaping the team

The first two-deep depth chart will come out of Saturday morning’s intrasquad scrimmage, as Bowden and his staff are still looking for answers on defense.
